UPDATE ON WEEKEND ACTIVITIES:

The Shorebreak car wash and cashola planned for tomorrow has been rescheduled for 10/22. If you have the ACT on this day please let me know so I can take you off of the schedule. Same times and shifts will apply. We will update the flyer ASAP to share.

Comp practice for Saturday is still planned. We will update you all if this changes due to inclement weather.

There will be NO comp practice on Friday. Please catch up on homework and spend time with your families!

The Old Dominion University Spirit Clinic has been rescheduled for November 5, 2016

This two hour cheer and dance clinic will be held in the Jim Jarrett Athletic Administration Building on the campus of Old Dominion University from 1PM to 3PM. Check-in will begin at 12:30PM. The price of this clinic is $30 per participant which includes a boxed lunch, clinic instruction, Monarch Walk, ticket to the ODU vs. Marshall football game and in game performance with the ODU Spirit Squads.

See below information on upcoming optional ODU clinic.

If we have interest we should register as a group (doesn't have to be the whole team). This is not required, but anyone interested can attend. If you would like to cheer in college or just want to cheer on a larger platform, this is  great opportunity!

The football game is schedule to start at 7PM at S. B. Ballard Stadium at Foreman Field. Parent/Coach/Advisor tickets are available for $10. Space is limited and only the first 75 participants.

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THIS LET ME KNOW ASAP!! :)

Positive Polly News!

Both of our Cheerleaders of the Week this week are the definition of what a Positive Polly should be. When the going gets tough, these girls get happier!

Friday at the game we had SO much excitement that I did not have a chance to announce our Varsity Cheerleader of the Week. I would like to announce her now instead of waiting until practice on Thursday so that we can all be proud of her for a whole week! Our Cheerleader of the Week is Emilie Allen. When others let negative energy in, Emilie is working her hardest to push positive energy out. Emilie is a silent leader. It may go unnoticed at times all that she does because she is so humble, but there is nothing Emilie won't do for her team and her friends. She puts the hours in working on stunting and tumbling as well and working on relationships. Emilie, we are so thankful to have you and be a part of your senior year!

This week's Varsity and JV Cheerleader of the Week is Whitney Long!! Whitney is a first year cheerleader and we couldn't be more proud of how far she has come in just 5 short months. Even when others are stressed and tired, Whitney always continues to keep a smile on her face. You can work years to build talent and athleticism, but it takes a special person to have the personality to make others smile and bring spirits up. Great job Whitney! We LOVE watching you grow!

We had an amazing Friday night! A huge win for the Falcons over Bayside, our very own Audrey got asked to homecoming and we cheered beside our tiniest Falcons! When it gets hard to keep your pep up remember - you are surrounded by people who need your spirit!!! Keep up the hard work!

  • LifeTouch is offering individual pictures tomorrow Monday August 22nd at noon for anyone interested in these. *There will not be a group photo taken tomorrow.

I hope you will enjoy quality afternoon pictures at a great price this year. As a parent I know how important these memories are! This does not however mean you have to choose to forgo the Lifetouch photos they will be available to those who want them at noon tomorrow.

Weekly motivation!
For Parents and Cheerleaders together: Nicole Fountain sent me this last week and I love it. It is such a "Positive Polly" quote!

World's Best Cheer Fam,

Hope you are all well this week! It was great to work on cheers for sideline on Monday and comp has been working VERY hard to get ready for choreography. This week's email will be short and sweet (well as short as I can manage). Only two bits of new info the rest are reminders. Below are the cheers again. Please continue to work on these. Our first scrimmage is week and our first game is next week! Attached you will also find the conflict sheet in case you don't have the original saved. Please fill this out ASAP! For all new cheerleaders, the Standards and Demerit System are also attached. Please complete these and return tomorrow at the parent meeting if you haven't already returned them.

The cheers can be found at the YouTube link below.

NEW INFO:

Fall Cook Book Fundraiser!

We will be creating and selling Cox Cheer Cookbooks for our fall fundraiser. This is set to cover new poms, comp costs, additional sideline costs and holiday parties. In order to not have comp costs each comp cheerleader will need to sell 20 cookbooks. New sideline cheerleaders are encouraged to participate to offset costs of new items you will be purchasing. Additionally each cheerleader will need to turn in at least 10 recipes. But we really need TONS more than this... You may start collecting recipes now from friends and family and when school starts we will need to collect from students and faculty to make this a complete "Cox Cookbook" I think this is an easy fundraiser that will make a great profit and provide a new yearly tradition for Cox Cheer. We will begin pre-sales the last week in August. Please participate!! :) We will get you a few examples soon!

COMPETITION TEAM

If you are one of the 24 team members selected for the competition team, I know you are anxiously awaiting our decision on who will take the mat in October. We are very proud of all of your hard work. We do ask that each athlete and parent understand that if chosen as an alternate the athlete might not ever see time on the mat in a competition this year. We have been asked to reiterate to each of you that this is not a rotating alternate situation. We can only have 20 on the mat at all times. This may be the same 20 for all 5 comps. It may change due to needs or injury. Whatever is decided will be to benefit the team as a whole moving toward the common goal of winning. It is important to remember this in agreeing to accept a spot on the competition team or a spot as an alternate. As alternates are chosen we will ask you to sign a contract similar to the sideline standards agreeing that you understand how this will work this year. I just wanted to make sure all are aware far before the contract is sent out though. Thank you!

The parent meeting tomorrow is mandatory

This is a school wide meeting for fall sports not just a cheer meeting. This is set up by the school and I will be held accountable for those that don't come and paper work that is not filled out. This is especially important for new to Cox cheer parents to attend. Comp will have practice during this time and all other cheerleaders that attend the meeting are welcome to hang in the gym and work on cheers during the meeting or they can stay with parents. at 6:45 there will be a break out session for just cheer related items. This will be very brief because cheer has taken care of almost everything already this year :)

**** FALL CONFLICT SHEETS ARE OVER DUE****

If you are not attending the scrimmage you had until today to let me know. If you did not let me know today please do immediately. It is only excused if I am made aware ahead of time.

DATES TO REMEMBER:

8/17 - fall sport parent meeting at school 6pm

8/18 - scrimmage game vs. Grassfield be there @ 6 pm (V and JV)

8/23 - team pictures @ 4:30 pm

8/24 - falcon fest @ 7 am

8/25 - fundraiser at apricot lane @ 11 am

8/25 - varsity team dinner at the Fountain's @ 6pm

8/26 - 1st Varsity home game vs. Tallwood be there @ 6pm

Weekly Motivation!

Cheerleaders:
"Remember, there is always a little girl or boy in the stands that wants to be just like you. Don't let them down." - as we approach the beginning of our seasons may it be sideline or comp, please remember that there are always tiny starstruck eyes watching you, wanting to be you. Use this as motivation to be your BEST you each time you take the mat or field!

Parents:
Your quote this week is simply a thank you from me for your support. Aside from supporting your cheerleader, this school, this program and this community, you endlessly support me in this tiring but ever so fulfilling endeavor. The endless kind words and encouragement you all send my way is so greatly appreciated. This job is so gratifying and you all are truly the icing on the cake! Thank you also for welcoming Coach Rachel and Coach Chris into this amazing Falcon Family with such open arms.

Thank you all and GO FALCONS!

Camp was an Amazing Success

posted Aug 10, 2016, 8:29 PM by Steven Sherman   [ updated Aug 10, 2016, 8:38 PM ]

Positive Polly News!

CAMP WAS AN AMAZING SUCCESS!

We took home 6 trophies, 3 spirit sticks, 2 top banana awards, a Camp Champ award and the OVERALL leadership award (voted on by their fellow campers) 3 All Americans, jump off winners, and one pin it forward recipient! More than all of this though the girls took home a new sense of team, a serious respect for themselves and for what other teams are putting in to be as clean and as sharp as they are. Our teams have always had difficulty, but at camp they learned the art of perfecting skills, keeping spirit levels high and doing each and every thing they do to the BEST of their ability. They learned so much and it was an amazing process to watch!!

All American Winners - Kayla Berrios, Alex Fountain, and Madison Huff (seniors who learned and perfected their material in less than 24 hours and beat dozens of girls for the top spots! We were one of the few schools who had ALL of our seniors tryout for this which shows great leadership and confidence!)

Jump-Off Winner - (BEST jumps out of the entire camp!!!)

Pin it Forward Winner

Ashley Evans (this award is given to less than a dozen girls at camp that show true leadership and compassion for their team mates and fellow athletes.

Audrey Ibata was given the pin it forward award by on of the original recipients. This award is so special because athletes win a pin to keep and one to "pin forward" Audrey received one for her amazing spirit at camp! Ashley Evans "broke the rules a bit" and gave hers to an entire team because she believed they all worked equally hard to show leadership and spirit. How awesome is it that the team she picked was Princess Anne High School from Virginia Beach! VBeach really showed VTech how it's done :)

Also a HUGE HUGE shoutout to Stacie Allen. I was in a pickle trying to wrangle all 32 girls on my own at camp and Stacie stepped up and really came through for us. She didn't just chaperone she coached, loved, and built up JV for 3 days straight. We would have never made it through camp without her and our other dedicated parents. All of you are so amazing and are taken for granted so often. I heard teams all week at camp comment on how involved and supportive our entire program is. THAT is what being a positive polly is all about ladies and gentlemen.

This is the biggest cheerleading program turn-out that Cox High School has ever seen. I think this speaks for itself that the hard work, dedication, love and support being poured into this program is already causing great success. I can't wait to see this year unfold with you all!!! Keep up the hard work Positive Polly parents, athletes, coaches and supporters :)

NOTES:

  • THE CALENDAR WILL BE ON OUR WEBSITE AND ATTACHED BELOW
  • Note that JV has practice tomorrow and that Varsity and JV both have practice on Monday. For the rest of Mondays in August we will have "two-a-days" for our crossover athletes doing comp and sideline. I know this will be hard work, but we have worked hard to make a schedule that will allow you longer periods of rest on the weekends. We hope to eliminate many of the injury related issues we have had in the past by doing this. Sideline practices will mainly be working on cheers and dances.
  • Scrimmage is August 18th at 6pm. This is not mandatory, but it would be great to have a large turn out. Wear your white camp outfit we wore on day one!
  • First Varsity Game - August 26th. KNOW YOUR CHEERS :)
  • Many of you have asked about choreo for comp. We will not do a 3/4 day 8 hour choreography session like in the past. This is not healthy for our athletes. We will instead choreograph through the entire month of August. This makes it extremely important to be at every practice. We have more athletes than we have spots at this time and will take the most dedicated members to the mat in October.
  • We are still deciding on which invitational competition we will attend that will benefit the program the best. Please keep Saturdays marked with **** open as they are the potential dates.
  • Tumbling classes on Saturdays will mandatory unless you have work or another commitment approved well in advance by Coach Chris. You determine your spot on the team. We will need to see you working hard on your tumbling skills in other ways if you cannot make the Saturday classes provided by Chris at Fame. There will need to be VERY legitimate reasons to miss such as work or illness.
  • Group 1 and Group 2 will be announced Monday.
  • All conflicts need to be turned in to me ASAP.
  • Open Gyms on the calendar are not mandatory, but are a great opportunity. They are also an opportunity to condition and erase all summer demerits for a clean start going into the fall season!! :)
  • This calendar can be confusing. I apologize for this. We have worked very hard to make 3 teams work with 3 other sports at the school for gym time this year. Check and double check when and where you need to be and make sure you are there and on time.

The cheers can be found at the YouTube link below.

Weekly motivation!

My weekly motivation is for parents and athletes together this week.

"This is a new year. A fresh start. Last Season is history. It's our time to make our history. It's time to give 100%. It's time to build strength and set the standard. A time to push ourselves harder. To Become a TEAM. Are you ready? Because I am." - you get one chance to do every day of your life. Make every ounce of effort you put into this sport count. Make it something to be proud of. Something to grow on. Make it a stepping stone for everything you want to be. Make it count. No regrets.

**IMPORTANT INFO
I have had a LOT of questions on the Big/Little gifts for camp. Here is a brief rundown. Girls need a SMALL I mean small gift for each day of camp (3 total) this is meant to be motivational from the heart. You have had all summer to start to know one another and should be able to successfully build one another up without spending much money. Think a heartfelt card and their favorite candy or something small that might show them you care. The monetary limit on this is $10. That is $10 for all 3 gifts. I know it's possible because I am a stand in for a big who is missing camp and did this easily because I got to know my little and focused on motivating her not spending money. You girls can do this! Make a poster with 10 reasons she deserves to be on this team or a "spirit queen" tiara and sash for her to wear around camp. Check Pinterest for millions of ideas.  You've got this ;)

See many of you tomorrow and ALL of you Wednesday!

Kiddie Camp Success

To say the last day of kiddie camp was a success is an understatement. These girls really got it together and made camp amazing for our future falcon cheerleaders! They had energy and spirit all day and the performance was the best the parents said they have seen. Congratulations Cox Cheer for representing our school and community in such a great light today and for having resilience after a rough day!

Kiddie camp is not only a fundraiser but an honor. Plan to work hard, show an amazing attitude and exude confidence and leadership the entire camp and be on your best behavior.

Older groups will learn our tryout dance (so brush up if you need to) and younger groups will be taught a dance by Bailee Adams who has offered to help us!

For review of the dance see the links below:

The four cheers we will teach them are:

2.     Beware of the falcons

3.     C-O-X everybody yell

4.     All the way

So please review. The cheers can be found at the YouTube link below.

WEEKLY MOTIVATION:

Cheerleaders

“Leadership is not a position or title, it is action and example." Tomorrow you begin a week filled with over 100 little girls who want to be just like you. You have the super power of leadership girls. Use it wisely. Be an outstanding example for these tiny sponges ready to soak up what you give them this week! You will do amazing and as ALWAYS you will make Cox and me so very proud!

Parents and family

“Live so that when your children think of fairness, caring and integrity they think of you.” as our girls head into a week filled with hundreds of chances to lead by example I remind you that it all started with you! Your cheerleader is the leader she is today for many reasons, many of which are on her own account, but each of them see how you treat people, how you lead, how you love and they imitate this. You are doing amazing! The proof is in this amazing group of young women!

Weekly Cheer Update 7/18 - 7/22

posted Jul 18, 2016, 4:45 AM by Steven Sherman   [ updated Jul 18, 2016, 4:47 AM ]

Falcon Family!

I hope you had an amazing weekend :) Going forward all weekly updates will be on Sunday's. Thanks for being patient as I find my flow.

NEWS
We have a new comp coach and a new JV coach. I apologize for the delay on announcing these. Background checks and such are pending. I appreciate your patience as we have put a lot of effort into finding the best, safest and most encouraging coaches for our teams.

CHEERLEADERS OF THE WEEK
Varsity - Hunter Davis! Hunter embodies everything a Cox Cheerleader should be. She leads by example, is always willing to try a new stunt or skill to help the team. In my time at Cox I can't remember ever hearing Hunter complain, yet when asked what her goals for herself this year are she replied "to be more positive and a better role model for the team". Falcons always strive for more, push harder, and never give up. Thank you Hunter for being the best Falcon you can be!

JV Meghan McBride! Meghan works hard on the mat and off. She is always asking what she can do to make herself and her team better. I am also honored to name her our 2016 JV co-captain. Meghan's hard work and drive to be the best she can be and lead her team to be the best they can be is exactly what being a Cox Cheerleader is all about! I can't wait to see Meghan continue to grow and shine in our program.

FUNDRAISING
  • Our totals from the KK fundraiser are:
  • Items sold - 434
  • Total profit - $2267.75
  • Top Sellers - Deme Malbon (she made $372!!), Alex Fountain ($197!!), Meghan McBride ($192!!)

IMPORTANT UPDATES
Practice Schedule - Cox Camps will be in the gym this week from 8:30-12:30 M-TH. Since we have not been able to secure an alternate location for practice this week I will have to move the time. I understand this is not ideal and many of you will not be able to change your schedules. For this reason practice will NOT be mandatory for this week. I would like to get a head count of how many of you will be able to make it to practice this week if held from 1-3 pm M-TH. Please cheerleaders respond to your respective group message by 6 pm today. If we have less than half from each team able to participate we will cancel practice for the week. Again I apologize for this change. This is cheer's first year needing summer gym time and there were a few scheduling mix-ups. Thanks for understanding :) An update on practice will go out at 6:30 with final say on if practice is on.

We have spots left for Kiddie Camp so please, please keep registering girls and getting your flyer out there!!

WEEKLY MOTIVATION
Cheerleaders - “Life is tough, my darling, but so are you.”  many of you are still struggling to see that you are tough enough to achieve these new harder goals and bigger expectations. I know that pushing ourselves harder isn't easy, but each of you have the ability to do this! We can go the distance this year and show everyone that Cox Cheer is MORE than they think we are. We are strong leaders, motivating friends, and an unbreakable family!

Parents and family - “Don't stop until you are proud.” as parents we are always proud, but remember that pushing them to be proud of themselves is so priceless. They will fall this year and they will need you more than they ever have to pick them up and say "you've got this! You were made for this. I am proud of you. Be proud of yourself."

Thank you all and GO FALCONS!
